Judges Findings

Kevin Boon is a writer without whom New Zealand’s children’s non-fiction would be infinitely poorer. His books about notable New Zealanders and New Zealand disasters have become core resources. This series follows on from titles published in 1999, but the judges felt these volumes marked a substantial advance on earlier volumes. Once more large gaps in New Zealand children’s non-fiction are filled. The scope is the second half of the 19th century:  the individual titles being Roads and Railways, The Forests, Development of Farming, and The Liberals. These are topics that for a long time, if at all, have only been covered as part of more general works, and it is excellent to have book length treatments of them.

A thematic approach to history, rather than a strictly chronological one, requires careful synthesis of the material, and Boon does this particularly well, moving through each topic in a way that to the reader is convincing and logical. The design of the books is excellent: attractive and colourful, no mean feat when the most obvious illustrations to use are black and white photos! Objects and scenes from museums such as the Kauri Museum in Matakohe are used to good effect, as well as paintings, maps, and photos. The page design with its subtle use of colour and symbols enhances the appeal. Care had been taken with the non-fiction must haves, with an index, glossary, references and sources. The list for further reading is up-to-date, and includes several at higher reading level for adults. Appropriate websites are also included.

The judges debated whether any one volume could be singled out, but in the end felt that the series as a whole was an enormously impressive achievement, with a high standard maintained throughout all four volumes. In the light of this achievement, the judges all agreed that it was a worthy winner of the Elsie Locke Award.
